Will Lee:
MIX MAGAZINE ARTICLE QUESTION:
What does a studio need to have--equipment, ambience, personnel--to get the most out of your talent?
WILL LEE ANSWER:
It has to have the ears of the person who's responsible for the project. Knowing what your equipment can do and how to utilize it is more important than having a lot of toys. A guy I've worked with, a great drummer and writer named Terry Silverlight, comes to mind. We've played on Nancy Wilson records together, and I've co-written and sung on lots of tracks with him. I'm amazed at what he does with a little reel-to-reel recorder, a sequencer and boatloads of talent.
Danny Gottlieb: I've been a fan of Terry Silverlight's for years, starting when Pat Metheny and I heard him on Barry Miles' "White Heat" album when he was 14 years old! This CD showcases his killer playing in a wide variety of styles. Congratulations, Terry!-Great tunes and great drumming..
Barry Eastmond: Not only is Terry Silverlight one of the baddest drummers on the planet, but his versatility as a keyboard player, composer and arrranger never ceases to amaze me. As a drummer, no matter what style of music, whether it be jazz, funk, pop or R&B, Terry always gives me exactly what I'm looking for.
Jim Chapin: (Author/Educator/Drummer) (As quoted in Terry's drum book)Terry Silverlight's new book makes me glad that through the years I have tried to keep within hailing distance, at least, of the drumming explosion. The book is a challenge and a joy. Let's have some more, Terry.
Barry Miles: (As quoted in Terry's drum book)The late 60s saw a revolution in contemporary drumming styles and techniques. Drummer Terry Silverlight was one of the very first to incorporate these styles and techniques into jazz, helping to pave the way for the new fusion music.
Morris Lang: (New York Philharmonic percussionist) (As quoted in Terry's drum book)I enjoyed examining Terry Silverlight's book and am amazed at how sophisticated jazz drumming has become. I think that the book is excellent preparation for reading multiple percussion works and for the rhythmic demands of contemporary music.
